How to Make Apple Crisp with Oats

Apple crisp is really simple to make. Here’s all you have to do.

  1. Peel and dice apples. Peel the apples and dice them into individual bite sized pieces so the apples cook evenly throughout.
  2. Coat the apples with sugar and spices. Most apple crisps are typically made with just cinnamon and sugar. But I enjoy adding ground ginger and a pinch of nutmeg, as well. The extra spice brings out the flavors in the apples and gives this apple dessert an old-fashioned taste.
  3. Make the oat topping. For a crispy topping, use equal parts of oats and flour. Add melted butter to the oats and flour and mix well.
  4. Put in a dish and bake. Put the diced apples in a baking dish and evenly spread the oat topping across the apples. Bake, and viola! Your apple crisp with oats is ready to enjoy.

Ingredients & Substitutions

  • 4 Pink Lady Apples (or any apple you prefer)
  • Brown Sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Ground Ginger
  • Salt
  • Lemon Juice
  • Nutmeg
  • Oats
  • Flour (can substitute chickpea flour or rice flour)

Flour Substitutes: If you’d like to substitute flour, one of the best substitutes is chickpea flour.

Chickpea flour is commonly used for baking due to its sturdy yet tender texture. And you can make this apple crisp a high protein meal by using chickpea flour and oats for the topping.

Rice flour is another good option when baking. Using rice flour makes for crisp baked goods since it has a finer texture than most other flours.

Helpful Gadgets for Making Apple Crisp

Kitchen Aid Classic Fruit Slicer: I highly recommend using a fruit slicer for coring and slicing apples. This convenient kitchen gadget can make coring and slicing apples easy and less time consuming. With one push you can easily core the apple and get eight equal sized slices. Coring apples and slicing apples has never been so easy!

Starfrit Rotato Express Electric Peeler: Love apples? But you are finding that peeling apples is one of your least favorite kitchen tasks at hand. This electric peeler is for you! This apple peeler makes peeling skin from apples easy. All you have to do is lock in your apple and the peeler does the rest!

How to Store

Storing Apple crisp wrapped in plastic or in an airtight container will keep apple crisp fresh for about 4 days. However always pay attention to the texture and smells of your food.

Reheating Instructions

Nothing is better than apple crisp fresh out of the oven.

But if you have any leftovers, your best option is to reheat it in the oven. Bake at 350 degrees and heat for 10-15 minutes. Warming Apple crisp in the oven will give you a crispy reheated crust that’s never soggy in texture as with microwaving.
