Why You’ll Love Fruit Salsa

A twist on traditional salsa – There are no savory flavors here. Like typical salsa made with onion, cilantro, and limes. Instead you get a sweet strawberry salsa that’s delicious with cinnamon sugar crisps. This is my household’s new favorite salsa recipe. If you’d like a more savory salsa mango avocado salsa is just that!

Versatile You can make fresh fruit salsa with just about any fruit or melon. (Check my recipe tips section for recommendations.)

Light & refreshing – The star of the show, or should I say stars? Are all the fresh fruits, when fruits, and fruit preserves meld together you get a fruity sweet dip that’s truly a treat. Especially, when sugary cinnamon crisps are the dippers. Fruit salsa with cinnamon sugar tortilla crisps are the things holidays are made of.

A real crowd pleaser – This is one of those recipes that’s perfect for any kind of party or holiday, from bridal showers, baby showers, summer barbecues, Cinco de Mayo, Fourth of July, Easter and Mother’s Day To Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Just like my, Healthy Greek Yogurt Veggie Dip which is also a showstopper and perfect for just about any occasion.

Strawberries – Are the star of the show and add delicious flavor. It’s best to get fresh strawberries from your local grocery store or farmers market.

Raspberries – are a delicious and health boosting fruit loaded with vitamin C, vitamin K, and have the most fiber than any other berry.

For the best flavor, pick out deep red raspberries. It also adds another pop of red to the salsa.

Granny Smith Apples – Add a tart, slightly sweet, crisp taste to this fruit salsa which balances out all the sweetness found in the other fruits.

Lemon – Lemon juice contains citric acid, which acts as an antioxidant, slowing down the oxidation process that causes browning when an apple is exposed to air.

Kiwi – This little fruit is sweet and juicy with a slightly tart taste. They’re also packed with Vitamin C and my little ones love them.

Fruit Preserves- I used strawberry preserves other favorites are raspberry, apricot, and blueberry, or any fruit preserves you enjoy.

Ingredients for Cinnamon Chips

  • Flour Tortillas
  • Melted Butter
  • Cinnamon + Sugar
Overhead view of ingredients needed to make baked cinnamon chips, including stack of flour tortillas, small bowl full of ground cinnamon, granulated sugar and butter.

Flour Tortillas – 8-inch flour tortillas cut into 6 triangles make the best size chip for dipping.

Melted Butter – You can use either salted or unsalted butter for brushing onto the tortillas so the cinnamon sugar sticks to them.

Cinnamon Sugar – Make your own with granulated sugar and ground cinnamon.

Steps to Make Fruit Salsa

  1. Prepare green apple – Peel, core, and dice green apple. Place green apple in a large bowl and squeeze juice of one lemon over diced apples and toss to coat. (this keeps the apples from browning)
  2. Prepare & chop kiwi – Peel skin from kiwi or (fruit of your choice.) chop and dice uniform in size.
  3. Wash & chop berries – Wash and rinse strawberries and raspberries and pat dry with paper towels. (see recipe tips)Chop and dice tiny and uniform in size.
  4. In a large mixing bowl – gently toss and mix kiwis, green apple, strawberries, raspberries, and fruit preserves.
  5. Cover and chill – fruit salsa in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes.

Steps to Make Cinnamon Chips

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. Melt butter in microwave and combine cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl.
  3. Brush one side of each tortilla with melted butter, then sprinkle evenly with a generous coating of cinnamon sugar.
  4. Stack three tortillas at a time and cut into triangles using a sharp knife or pizza cutter. Arrange in a single layer, cinnamon sugar side up on a baking sheet. (You may need to use more than one tray depending on how many chips you make.)
  5. Bake for 8 minutes. Allow to cool for a few minutes and serve with fruit salsa.

Recipe Tips

Look for nice, ripe red raspberries and strawberries that way you wont need to add any sugar and your salad will pop with color.

Add granulated sugar, to fruit salsa if your berries aren’t ripe. Since my berries were nice and ripe I didn’t need to add any sugar.

Make sure to wash and rinse berries, extremely well. I like to go the extra mile and gently rinse berries under cold water in a colander, then pat dry with paper towels before storing in a container lined with paper towels to absorb excess moisture.

To save time, Use a fruit cutter set to core and peel the apple and dice berries.

Dice all fruit small, and uniform in size so salsa is easily scooped on chips.

To make ahead, Prepare and cook tortilla chips the night before your event and store in an airtight container until ready to eat fruit salsa.

You may also cut and prepare all fruit ahead of time besides the green apple, since it could brown. Store diced fruit in the fridge in an airtight container until ready to make the fruit salsa. Chop and dice apple right before adding to salsa.

Squeeze lemon juice into a bowl, and remove any seeds. Then pour lemon juice over diced green apple and toss to coat.

To prevent apples from browning, squeeze diced apples with juice of one lemon and toss to coat.

Lemon juice contains citric acid, which acts as an antioxidant, slowing down the oxidation process that causes browning when an apple is exposed to air

Why use fruit preserves in salsa? It adds more flavor and a thicker texture. I used strawberry preserves, you can use any fruit preserves you’d like depending on what flavor you prefer.

Fruit Salsa is best made the same day, and not too far ahead of time. If made too far in advance salsa will become runny because of fruit juices.

If kiwis aren’t your thing, other fruits that are delicious in this recipe are mangos, papayas, pineapples, peaches, and watermelon. So delicious!

What to Serve with Strawberry Fruit Salsa

Cinnamon chips and cinnamon sugar crackers pair really well with fruit salsa. Here are a few options:

  • homemade cinnamon chips
  • cinnamon crunch popcorners
  • cinnamon sugar graham crackers

My favorite dipper is the homemade baked cinnamon chips. They come out nice and crisp, have buttery cinnamon flavor, and are inexpensive to make.
