Blueberry Filling: Canned blueberry pie filling is convenient and bursting with flavor, but you can also use fresh or frozen blueberries combined with sugar. My recipe for blueberry crisp with frozen blueberries is a favorite!
Yellow Cake Mix: What makes this blueberry cobbler so simple to put together and taste ridiculously delicious is boxed yellow cake mix dumped on top of blueberries.
In fact, it only takes 10 minutes or less until the cobbler is ready to bake.
To switch things up, try white cake mix or even lemon.
Butter: Salted butter is my preferred butter for this recipe. The canned blueberry pie filling and cake mix provide an abundance of sweetness. Salted butter balances it out.
How to Make Blueberry Cobbler with Cake Mix
The easiest method to make blueberry dump cake cobbler is to simply dump the blueberries in a baking dish, sprinkle yellow cake mix over the berries, and pour all the melted butter on top.
It’s as simple as 1-2-3!
For a more crumbly topping, I divide the cake mix as described below.
- Dump the blueberry pie filling into an 8×8 baking dish that’s coated with butter.
- Dump half of the dry yellow cake mix on top of the berries. Using a spoon, push just a little bit of the cake mix down into the berries and around the sides. Do NOT stir. (You should still see mostly cake mix on top of the cobbler.)
- Melt butter and combine with remaining cake mix. Stir until just combined to form a soft dough.
- Place crumbles of cake mix “dough” on top of the dry cake mix layer. Pinch small bits of dough and place on top of cobbler until the top is covered.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes. Be sure to let the cobbler rest after baking so it’s not as runny when you cut into it.

Add lemon: To brighten the blueberry, try adding some fresh lemon juice and lemon zest to the blueberry pie filling layer before topping it with cake mix. I also love lemon zest to garnish a scoop of ice cream served alongside the cobbler.
Reserve some blueberries to garnish dessert: Set aside some of the canned blueberries to use when serving the cobbler. If you love blueberry sauce, here’s my easy recipe for blueberry compote made from frozen blueberries.
Use fresh blueberries. In-season blueberries at peak flavor can be used in place of the canned filling. For this recipe, combine about 4 cups of blueberries and 1 cup of sugar in advance to form juices.
Don’t dump all the cake mix. Many blueberry cobbler dump cake recipes call for just piling the ingredients on top of each other: first the blueberries, then all the cake mix, and finally the melted butter.
However, I find that it’s difficult to get all the cake mix soaked in butter using that method.
Instead, add half the cake mix on top of the blueberries and push it down into the sauce a little bit.
In a separate bowl, combine the remaining cake mix and all the butter. It will make a soft dough.
Using clean hands, top the blueberry cobbler with bits of the cake mix “dough” until completely covered. The blueberry compote comes out amazing this way!
Avoid burned crust edges. If the edges bake faster than the rest of the cobbler topping, cover them with foil to avoid burning.
Let the cobbler rest. You might be tempted to eat the cobbler immediately when it’s done baking. But, it’s best to let it rest for at least 20 minutes. This way will firm up a little (as much as a cobbler can firm up, that is).

- Another easy method to put together blueberry cake mix cobbler is to simply dump the blueberries in the baking dish followed by the cake mix on top of the berries. Finally, pour the melted butter over the cake mix and bake. I prefer my method because it makes a nice crumbly butter cake topping that seeps into the blueberry layer.
